Project details

Council has approved a revised concept design for the Hutt Street Revitalisation project after listening to community feedback and completing a detailed technical review. The design aims to make Hutt Street safer, more accessible and greener, while keeping its important role as a local main street. It maintains most on‑street parking to support nearby businesses, residents and visitors.

Community input helped shape the design, with many people wanting to protect the character of the street while still improving how it works for everyone. Council also considered things like construction impacts, business access, cost and funding to make sure the project can be delivered smoothly and with as little disruption as possible.

The approved concept design responds directly to what people told us was most important, including:

  • Retaining Hutt Street’s village feel and identity, which supports local businesses and street life.
  • Making it safer and easier for people walking and cycling, particularly at intersections and crossing points and through providing increased space between parked cars and on road cycle lanes.
  • Protecting and enhancing greenery, including the addition of new trees to strengthen the existing avenue character and refreshing existing landscaping.
  • Providing convenient on-street parking, supporting business access and activation along the street. Parking is being kept at 60 degree angle (as it is currently) and 110 car parks will be provided on Hutt Street.

Hutt Street will be revitalised between South Terrace and Carrington Street.

Next steps

With the plan now confirmed, we’re moving into the next phase of delivery. You may not see much activity on the street just yet, but our team is hard at work turning the concept design into detailed plans ready for construction. Part of this process is engaging a specialist design and engineering team to support us to deliver the project, with procurement to commence this month.

Over the coming months, we’ll speak directly with businesses and property owners along Hutt Street. This will happen before construction starts and will help us to understand day to day business operations and how these can be accommodated during the construction delivery as far as practicable.

The City of Adelaide is committed to carrying out works in stages to minimise disruption. Construction is anticipated to start early to mid 2027. More information will be made available well ahead of construction commencing.

We’re also continuing to work with our funding partners and are seeking federal government support to help deliver this project.
