The City of Adelaide is revitalising Hutt Street as part of the Main Street Revitalisation program.
The existing infrastructure will be renewed and the street enhanced to improve safety.
This project will create a more attractive and comfortable street environment, better accessibility for community and visitors alike.

Project Details
Following Council's endorsement of the concept design, the project has now progressed into detailed design. Community feedback helped shape the approved concept, which retains Hutt Street's character while improving safety, accessibility and greening.
The approved concept design responds to what people told us was most important, including:
- Retaining Hutt Street’s village feel and identity, which supports local businesses and street life.
- Making it safer and easier for people walking and cycling, particularly at intersections and crossing points by providing increased space between parked cars and on-road bike lanes and two proposed pedestrian refuge crossings.
- Protecting and enhancing greenery, including the addition of new trees to strengthen the existing avenue character and refreshing existing landscaping.
- Providing convenient on-street parking, with 110 parking spaces retained in the existing 60‑degree arrangement.
The project has now entered the detailed design phase. Our team is progressing engineering, landscape and technical investigations to prepare detailed construction documentation
In July 2026; a specialist design and engineering team was engaged to help support the delivery of the project. You may notice them working in the area as they carry out site inspections, surveys and technical investigations to support the detailed design process.

The detailed design process is expected to take approximately 12 months.
The City of Adelaide is committed to carrying out works in stages to minimise disruption. Construction is anticipated to get underway late 2027/early 2028.
More information will be made available well ahead of construction commencing.

Over the coming months, we’ll speak directly with businesses and property owners along Hutt Street. The purpose of this will be to share further information about the street design. This will happen before construction starts and will help us to understand day to day business operations and how these can be accommodated during the construction delivery as far as practicable.

Hutt Street is one of Adelaide’s main streets and is known for its village-like cluster of cafés and restaurants, which operate alongside day-to-day essential community services. There has been no major upgrade in the last 30 years.
In 2022 we completed Master Planning for Hutt Street which identified potential opportunities to enhance Hutt Street. These included upgrading the public realm, creating more space for public activities and improving access.
As part of the revitalisation project, some streetscape assets may also be replaced including stormwater infrastructure, road pavement, public lighting, footpath paving and street furniture. This will be further reviewed as the design is progressed.
Community Feedback
The concept plan has been endorsed by Council, and feedback received through public consultation will inform the next stage of detailed design.
