In 2025, the City of Adelaide is proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week with a special photography project that honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. This project aims to shine a light on the strength, vision, and legacy of families who are preserving and passing down their cultural wisdom across generations.

We invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, spanning three or more generations, to apply for the opportunity to be part of this exciting project. The project will culminate in a photography exhibition displayed throughout Rundle Mall, providing visibility, support, and recognition to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture.

Who can apply?

We are looking for three Aboriginal families who have three or more generations of family members, including children, parents, and Elders. Families should identify with one or more of the following regions/landscape categories:

  • Desert Country
  • Coastal Country
  • River Country

These families will have the opportunity to share their stories and hopes for the future, highlighting the strength and legacy that each generation carries forward.

What's involved?

Selected families will have the chance to work with Colleen Strangways a renowned Aboriginal photographer and emerging photographer Jakirah Telfer to create a series of portraits that represent the unique connection between their generations. The project includes the following:

  • Portrait photography: A session where all family members will be photographed together, capturing the essence of their family unit.
  • Short storytelling sessions: Families will have the opportunity to share their personal history, the stories of their ancestors, and their vision for the future.
  • Exploring legacy: The project will ask families to reflect on who in their family is seen as the keeper of their legacy – the one who carries forward stories, wisdom, and traditions that connect past, present, and future generations. This could be an Elder or a young person.
  • Launch event: Families will attend the NAIDOC in the Mall event to celebrate the official launch of the photography series, showcasing the portraits throughout Rundle Mall.

How to apply?

If your family identifies with one of the listed regions and is ready to share your story with the broader community, we encourage you to apply. The application process will include:

  • Personal details of family members
  • Your family's connection to one of the regions/landscapes (Desert, Coastal, Inland)
  • A brief story or reflection on the legacy and future of your family

We look forward to celebrating your family’s strength, vision, and legacy.

Applications are open until 5:00 pm Monday 19 May 2025.
