Hard Waste Collection Guidelines

Low Density Dwellings (6 or less dwellings on a one site):

  • Maximum total limit of 2 cubic metres (2m3) of hard waste - equivalent to a 6’ x 4’ trailer load, per household.
  • Items can be placed on the verge no earlier than 24 hours before your collection date and no later than 7am on the collection day.
  • Place your waste as close to the kerb as possible in a safe and secure manner, clear of the footpath or road e.g. lay taller items down, do not stack items too high.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the waste is maintained safely until collection, even if it is disturbed by others.

High Density Sites (7 or more dwellings on a one site):

  • Maximum total limit will depend on the number of dwellings on the site presenting hard waste, this can be confirmed at the time of booking.

  • The length of any item must not exceed 1.5 metres.
  • Lay taller items down, do not stack items too high.
  • Items must be able to be handled safely by two people - no greater than 50kg.
  • Bags or boxes must be strong enough so that they do not break open when lifted.
  • Items placed on the verge without a confirmed booking or more than 24 hours before the scheduled collection date could incur a $315 fine for illegal dumping/littering.
  • Only place items for collection that are listed below as items that WILL be collected. Other items are determined to be unacceptable and it is the responsibility of the resident to remove such items.

Items you can include in hardwaste collection

Items you cannot include in hard waste collection

Please note:

The following is considered to be illegal dumping and you may incur a $315 fine:

  • Placing items outside your property without a hard waste collection booking; or
  • Placing items outside of other properties in the Council area; or
  • Placing items out for collection more than 24 hours prior to your scheduled collection; or
  • Failure to remove uncollected items from the verge if they were determined to be unacceptable items.

What happens to the items after collection?

Council's collection contractor, Solo Resource Recovery uses two vehicles for pick up, a compactor truck and flatbed truck. The flatbed truck is used to collect TVs and computers and fridges and freezers that require de-gassing, making recycling of these items easier and safer.

Other hard waste is collected by a rear loading compactor truck and sent to a material recovery facility were the material is sorted mechanically to remove recyclable materials such as wood and metal.

Where else can I dispose of material?

If you either have additional material, or material that is not accepted through our hard waste collection, there are various other disposal methods:

The City of Adelaide’s Green Waste Recycling and Mulch Centre – War Memorial Drive, North Adelaide  – for garden waste.

Zero Waste SA Household Hazardous Waste Depot – for liquid, paints, chemicals, motor oil, pesticides, etc.

Visit Zero Waste SA Recycle Right search engine - for tips on where to dispose of various items.
