Adelaide thrives as a city that embraces its diverse community, culture, and creativity. The Adelaide City Library is a key part of the city and serves as a dynamic community hub, offering state-of-the-art collections and facilities within a laid-back atmosphere, creating a space full of possibilities.

The South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) Emerging Curator opportunity, is an annual art exhibition celebrating Adelaide's distinctive heritage, multicultural richness, and creative culture. This year marks the sixth edition of the SALA Exhibition Project. We are seeking an emerging Curator to develop, coordinate, and realise an exhibition spanning across the City Library.

This exhibition is an opportunity for contemporary art and innovative curation to connect with a diverse audience from an unconventional location outside the traditional gallery space. It is also an opportunity to promote Artists and to support their enterprise through the sale of their artworks.

The SALA Festival Emerging Curator will curate and realise an exhibition that is:

  • An engaging and rich cultural experience.
  • A high-quality curated physical and virtual exhibition showcasing South Australian artists.
  • To provide opportunities for audiences to engage with the Curator and exhibition through an accompany public program.

Key Information

With over 600+ visitors daily the Adelaide City Libraries are a diverse and dynamic community hub with leading collections and facilities and a relaxed atmosphere. It is a place of possibilities.

Within the City Library there are a number of areas to display artwork that offer the community to engage with a broad, local, national and international audience in an unconventional, ‘beyond the white cube’ locus.

These council spaces are used for the benefit of the City of Adelaide, its residents and visitors in an organised and fair manner. Exhibition spaces are flexible to display a variety of mediums ad are offered free of charge to individual artists, community organisations and internal/external partners.

The library has a number of display spaces and facilities to utilise, and the libraries are able to accommodate different mediums. Applications are encouraged to visit the libraries to view the spaces available in order to determine which is the most suitable for presenting their artwork.

Exhibition Project Details

Exhibition Project dates:

Exhibition Project: early April – 30 September 2025

Exhibition Installation: late July 2025

Exhibition: 1 August – 22 September 2025

Deinstallation: 24 September 2025

Curator budget:

$4000 (ex. GST)

Exhibition Project Curator deliverables:

The Curator will curate and deliver the SALA Emerging Curator Exhibition Project in the City Library for the SALA Festival 2025. This includes:

  • Selecting and coordinating multiple artists;
  • Curating an exhibition that utilises as many City Library spaces as possible;
  • Ensuring the exhibition and artworks are ethically considered and suited to general audiences;
  • Contributing to the production of an exhibition booklet publication, video testimonial and media release, including sourcing images and copyrights;
  • Co-planning of a launch event for Friday 8 August 2025;
  • Availability for marketing, promotional and media opportunities, including participating in a video production the exhibition
  • The planning, participation in and delivery of at least one public program event.
Exhibition Project City Library deliverables:

City Library will be pleased to further support the SALA exhibition through the provision of:

  • The exhibition venue and relevant spaces free of charge;
  • Advice and mentorship;
  • Coordination of a launch event;
  • Coordination and collaboration on the exhibition and public program;
  • Production of the exhibition publication;
  • Marketing and media promotion.
