Autumn brings new life to the city

It’s the time of year when the temperature begins to drop, the air is crisp, and the leaves turn to warm brilliant shades of Autumn. Who doesn’t love a stroll through the city with the crunch of leaves under your feet?

We all love Autumn, and as the leaves start to fall and the wet weather sets in leaves can quickly turn from charm to hazard as our footpaths become lined with shades of red, orange and yellow.

That’s where our hardworking street sweepers come in working tirelessly to keep on top of the consistent leaf fall during Autumn.

Michel Diratani, Team Leader for the Waste and Cleansing team says streets with the most foot traffic like Rundle Street and Hindley Street are swept daily just to keep up with the fall.

“Surprisingly our sweepers can do up to 10 loads a day resulting in 100m3 of leaves collected – the equivalent of up to 150 6x4 trailer loads!” says Michel.

So, what happens to all this leaf fall once it’s collected?

During Autumn, leaf fall is collected and sent directly to our Green Waste and Mulch Centre. Here it is sorted to remove rubbish and then added to green waste to produce mulch.

Mulch not only helps to make your garden look great, but it also retains moisture in the soil, aids micro-organisms and introduces organic material to improve poor quality soils.

Matt Jorgensen, Team Leader for our Park Lands Maintenance team says the centre provides a sustainable service for the whole community.

“Turning green waste into organic material not only stops unnecessary landfill, but also provides an organic product back to the community such as composts and mulches that ultimately work towards improving the ecosystems within the city,” says Matt.

The centre provides a sustainable service for the whole community, convenient for residents and available for anyone outside of the city to dump green waste and purchase mulch and compost.

Residents within the City of Adelaide can access up to four free green waste dumps per year and purchase mulch from the centre at half price.

While non-residents can access the centre for green waste dumping and to purchase mulch for a fee.
