What is a Supplementary Election?

A supplementary election in local government is held to fill a vacancy that occurs between regular election cycles. This can happen if a council member resigns, passes away, or is otherwise unable to continue in their role. These elections ensure that the council remains fully staffed and can continue to function effectively.

In South Australia, the Electoral Commissioner oversees these elections, ensuring they are conducted fairly and transparently.

The process involves:

  • notifying the public of the vacancy
  • opening the voters roll for the supplementary election
  • accepting nominations
  • conducting the vote (via postal ballot)

The voters roll for the 2025 City of Adelaide Central Ward Supplementary Election is open until 30 May 2025.

If you are a resident and correctly enrolled for state elections in South Australia, you are automatically included on the council voters roll and will receive ballot papers through the post when a supplementary election is held.

Eligible voters are those who are enrolled on the voters roll for that specific ward at the close of the roll for the supplementary election.

This includes:

1. Residents (Standard Enrolment)

2. Residents (not entitled to be on the State Electoral Roll)

3. Residential or Commercial Property Owners, or Commercial Occupiers/Tenants (Council Roll)

    • You don’t have to live in the ward, but if you own, occupy, or lease a property in the ward (as an individual or business), you can register to ensure you are included on the council supplementary voters roll.
    • This means business owners, landlords, and even companies can vote - but you must be registered before the roll closes.

Use the Voters Roll Checker tool to determine whether the City of Adelaide has your details as an owner of a commercial property, or occupier/tenant of a commercial property on our Council Voters Roll. If not, fill in the City of Adelaide’s Voters Roll - Registration Form to register your details by 30 May 2025.
