Citizen awards & ceremonies

The City of Adelaide welcomes new Australian citizens and recognises local citizens and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the district.

Through the Citizen of the Year awards, the City of Adelaide recognises the significant contributions of locals to their communities. They also host a number of Citizenship Ceremonies throughout the year.

Citizen of the Year awards

The City of Adelaide Citizen of the Year awards are held in partnership with the Australia Day Council (SA) and recognises local citizens and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the city of Adelaide.

Nominees inspire us through their achievements and challenge us to make our own contribution to creating a better Adelaide and Australia. There are three categories:

  • Citizen of the Year – nominees must be an Australian citizen
  • Young Citizen of the Year – must be an Australian citizen aged 30 or less on 26 January on the year of the award
  • Community Event of the Year – awarded to the person/group who staged the most outstanding community event during the past year.

2019 Citizen of the Year award winners

City of Adelaide is proud to announce the below individuals/organisations who were nominated and awarded in 2019:

  • Citizen of the Year: Mr Tim Seymour-Smith and Mr Mike Chalmers
  • Young Citizen of the Year: Amber Cronin
  • Community Event of the Year: Walk a Mile in My Boots

How to nominate

Please note, we are currently not accepting nominations.
Nominations for 2020 Citizen of the Year will open in October 2019.

Each local Council in South Australia seeks nominations from their local area. Nominations are accepted from any individual or organisation, who can nominate people that meet eligibility criteria for the area.

All nominations are assessed by the City of Adelaide Civic Recognition Working Group. Members include the Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor, and the Chief Executive Officer. The award recipients are typically announced at the Council’s Australia Day celebrations.

Citizenship ceremonies

The City of Adelaide hosts a number of ceremonies during the year. Those who have been accepted as new citizens of Australia make their pledge to Australia and receive their Citizenship certificates. Please note these ceremonies are by invitation only.
