Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs)
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in Australia. Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) can dramatically increase the chance of survival.
The City of Adelaide, supported by SA Ambulance and the Heart Foundation, has installed AEDs for public use in 24 locations throughout the city and North Adelaide.
AED locations with 24-hour public access
You’ll find AEDs in the two most popular meeting places in Adelaide:
- Rundle Mall (near Stephens Place)
- Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga (near the public toilets to the northeast of the square)
You can easily identify the AED location. Just look for the heart-shaped artwork by artist Pat Welke above each device.

In addition, 24hour accessible AEDs can be found in the following locations across the city and North Adelaide:
- Melbourne Street, the midway point
- Wellington Square
- Light Square
- Whitmore Square
- Hurtle Square
- Hindmarsh Square
- On the Riverbank near Popeye’s landing in Elder Park
- Par 3 Golf Café, near the Weir
- Velo Café, near the Victoria Park grandstand

Locations with restricted AED public access
The City of Adelaide has installed AEDs at many of its community centres and businesses. Access to these AEDs is limited to the opening hours of the facility.

- City of Adelaide Customer Centre, Pirie Street,
- Adelaide Central Market (3),
- City of Adelaide Libraries (Hutt St, City Library),

In addition to the locations featured on the map above, there are other AEDs located within the city on private property and within many businesses.
In the event of an emergency dial 000 and follow the operator's instructions. The SA Ambulance will direct you to the nearest registered AED.
Council is committed to increasing the wellbeing and resilience of our residents and wants to encourage residents, city users and visitors to use the city safely. In addition, Council has responsibilities to consider public health initiatives under the Public Health Act 2011.
In February 2016 Council determined that it would work in partnership with SA Ambulance and the Heart Foundation, to install automatic external defibrillators or AEDs for public use in various locations throughout the city and North Adelaide.
In the event of an emergency dial 000 and follow the operator’s instructions. They will direct you to the nearest available AED.
