Established in 1840, we are the oldest municipal authority in Australia, with a long and proud reputation of a clean environment, enviable lifestyle, religious freedom and civil liberties. Today, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sports events, world class education and is regularly acknowledged as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

The City of Adelaide is a very multi-cultural city. More than 3500 people living in the City of Adelaide have Chinese heritage. The largest proportion of overseas students coming to Adelaide is from China. The business migrant community in Adelaide is also growing and flourishing, bringing investment and jobs.

Adelaide City Council has a strong history of international partnerships through Sister City connections dating back more than 40 years. The City of Adelaide is proud to celebrate the 31 year relationship between the State of South Australia and the Province of Shandong and the 16 year relationship between the City of Adelaide and the City of Qingdao. South Australia’s Sister State relationship with Shandong Province and Adelaide’s Sister City relationship with Qingdao are both extremely important to the City of Adelaide.

Parliament House

One of Adelaide’s most historically significant landmarks, Parliament House has an impressive West and East Wing, both built from locally sourced granite and marble and exquisite examples of craftsmanship and design from a bygone era. The West Wing has housed the South Australian House of Assembly since 1889 and the Legislative Council since 1939. The East Wing was opened in 1939.

Tandanya

Art Gallery of South Australia

Founded in 1881 and the centrepiece of Adelaide’s cultural boulevard, North Terrace, the Art Gallery of SA is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings and home to one of Australia's great art collections. Last year the Gallery welcomed 700,000+ visitors.

State Library of South Australia

The State Library of SA is a venue like no other. Rich in history inside and out, it’s the largest public reference library in the state and hosts many free exhibitions. The magnificent Mortlock wing, with its grand masonry columns, gold ornamented wrought iron balustrading and glass-domed roof, is an impressive exhibition space offering a window into the history and culture of SA. Open daily from 10am-5pm (except when hired, check in advance), entry to the Mortlock wing is free and captions make it easy to explore on your own.

Migration Museum

Delight the tastebuds and experience Adelaide’s proud food culture at the Adelaide Central Market, the largest undercover market in the Southern Hemisphere. Here you will find over 80 stalls showcasing the best of local produce.

After a bite to eat, explore the West End precinct which includes the Adelaide Casino and historic architecture and buildings such as Parliament House. If you are looking to immerse yourself in the beautiful green surrounds of the city pop over to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. To get a close look at Australian animals visit the Adelaide Zoo, Australia’s second oldest zoo.
