Adelaide Gaol
Adelaide Gaol Historic Site
Until 1988 the Gaol housed convicts within its historic walls. It was acquired by the National Trust and restored as a prison and museum.
The first stage of construction of the Gaol opened in 1841 and the remainder was built 6 years later. It is a unique example of nineteenth century Gaol architecture built to a half decagon design. Since 1847 there have been many extensions added and these can be easily identified.
Remand and convicted prisoners were housed in the Gaol (females were included until 1969). Employment at the Gaol included building renovation, garden maintenance, kitchen, bakehouse and laundry duties.
